FG calls for greater int’l cooperation in tackling disinformation

Nigerian Government has called for greater international cooperation to tackle disinformation noting that challenges posed by it cannot be solved in isolation.

Nigerian Foreign Minister, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar who made this Wednesday at the Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN) Diplomatic/Security International Conference 2025 held in Abuja advocated support for capacity building in digital diplomacy for developing nations and more inclusive multilateral frameworks that acknowledge demographic diversity.

Tuggar also called for renewed commitment to Africa’s peace architecture where Nigeria continues to play a leading role through ECOWAS and the African Union.

Tuggar represented by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Mr. Alkasim Abdulkadir said one of the more pernicious threats facing diplomacy today was the rise of strategic misperceptions fueled not by misunderstanding alone, but by orchestrated disinformation, deepfake technologies, and hostile narratives.

Continuing, he stressed the need to move from reactive to strategic communication by projecting not only our policies but also our values, vision, and voice.

“As we navigate the uncertainties of this age, let us be guided not by fear, but by the firm conviction that diplomacy—when grounded in truth, driven by intelligence, and amplified by responsible media can restore stability to our world.

“Nigeria stands ready to work with all who share these ideals” he said.

Also speaking, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Chris Musa represented by Rear Admiral I.M. Haruna stressed the need for deliberate and consistent cooperation between journalists and diplomats in addressing global security challenges.

He stated Nigerian Armed Forces commitment in combating transborder crimes and addressing the country’s multi-dimensional security threats.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbotokun represented DCP Kabiru Abdullahi noted that the spread of fake news and disinformation constitutes a crime that should concern every stakeholder.

He noted that journalists must be guided by professionalism, credibility, and ethical standards in their reportage.

Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, represented by the Director of Public Affairs and Protocol, Mr. Abdulrahman Balogun, tasked journalists on professionalism by countering disinformation through factual reportage.

Chairman of DICAN, Mr. Idehai Frederick urged diplomats and security stakeholders in Nigeria to strengthen strategic engagement with the media to effectively shape public understanding of their countries’ policies and programmes.
