Nitel/Mtel creditors demand payment from privatization Council, liquidator

Creditors of the now liquidated Nigeria Telecommunications Plc (NITEL) and its GSM arm, Nigerian Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTEL) have demanded for immediate payment of debts owned their members by the liquidator amounting to N247 million.

Addressing newsmen during a peaceful protest Wednesday at the Bureau for Public Enterprise (BPE) headquarters in Abuja, Engr. David Oyibo and Dr Ishaya Bawa who spoke on behalf of creditors requested that the trio of National Council of Privatization headed by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Federal Ministry of Finance and Bureau for Private Enterprise (PBE) pay the liquidator, Otunba Olutola Senbore who will in turn pay the outstanding debts owed to them.

Oyibo, a Civil Engineer asked that the N247 Million which had been owned them since 2004 be paid urgently given the fact that most creditors were facing hard time to the extent of not being able to transport themselves to the venue of the peaceful protest.

Oyibo said that he has been harassed by his landlord for his inability to pay his rent which was as a fall out of the debt.

He said that most of their members are really traumatized by this unfavourable turn of event and called on Federal Government to come to their aide to enable them enjoy the fruit of their labour before dying.

Also speaking, Dr Ishaya Bawa who also spoke on behalf of the creditors lamented that some of them mortgaged their property to execute the job only to be frustrated like this saying that things were really hard for most of their members.

.Bawa categorically appealed to the authorities responsible for the payment to expedite action on the immediate payment of the debt to enable them enjoy the fruit of their labour while on alive.

However, reacting on behalf the management of Bureau for public Enterprise, the Labour Adviser, Harrison Boniface said the management was doing everything humanly possible to resolve the matter saying that a meeting was currently being held to resolve the lingering debt issue.
