Road Safety is a collective responsibility, says FCT DRTS Ag Director

The Acting Director, FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) and Chairman of FCT Road Safety Council, Mrs. Deborah Alaba Osho has said that ensuring safety on the road was a collective responsibility that requires not only enforcement, but education, planning, coordination and constant learning.

Osho who made this known at a One-Day-Strategic Capacity building for FCT Road Safety Council members in Abuja Thursday themed: “Empowered to Save Lives in Abuja” said the training served as an opportunity for council members to equip themselves with modern tools and strategies for effective road safety coordination, policy implementation, and community engagement.

Continuing, the Ag. Director said the training reflects shared commitment to building safer roads, saving lives, and strengthening the institutional capacity of those entrusted with promoting road safety across the Federal Capital Territory.

While admitting that challenges faced on the roads were enormous, evolving from increasing traffic volumes to emerging technologies and changing driver behavior, she, said members must continually build their skills, update knowledge, and adopt best practices in road safety management to respond effectively.

Osho encouraged all participants to take full advantage of the sessions, share experiences, and commit to translating the knowledge gained into practical actions that will make a real difference on our roads.

She thanked partners, facilitators, and all participants for their dedication to the cause, expressing hope that by members working together, they create a safer road environment for all who live, work, and travel within the FCT.

Also speaking, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Transportation Secretariat, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Elechi represented by DRTS Deputy Director, Legal, Bar. Amade Mary informed that the capacity building was a wakeup call for all members urging them to live up to expectations after equipped with knowledge from the training.

According Elechi, “This capacity building is a wakeup call and after being equipped the responsibility of passing the message, across to higher authority and even our friends, associates and dependents is an enormous responsibility. “I’m very sure from what has been said. The next step will be to go into work. In putting together the gaps, things that needs to be done and then remodeling our legislations where necessary.

“All that we need is some level of increased commitment and dedication and sacrifice” he said.

General Secretary of FCT Road Safety Council and Head of Secretariat, Abdulgafar Afolabi in his Vote of Thanks commended Ag. Director of FCT DRTS, Mrs. Osho for making the training a reality with her support which he said was a morale booster for the council.

While thanking members for participating in the training, he urged them to make judicious use of the knowledge gained for the promotion of safer roads and good of the society.
