The Embassy of People’s Republic of China to Nigeria has donated 500 face masks and two infrared thermometer guns to Nigeria Union of Journalists (FCT) Council.
The items which were presented Tuesday in Abuja by the Embassy’s Head of Press, Mr. Sun Chen Peng were meant to support journalists in cushioning the effects of being on the frontline of battle against Covid-19 pandemic.
A statement signed by Secretary of Council, Ochiaka Ugwu, quoted the Chairman of Council, Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche saying that China is really a friend in need which is a friend indeed in coming to the aide of the council when they needed them most.
He said the gesture was a demonstration of robust friendly relation between China and Nigeria which is growing by the day.
Continuing, he noted the gesture has shown that China’s relation with Nigeria was based on mutual benefit and shared prosperity.
Ogbeche however, urged other missions and organized private sectors to emulate China by donating generously to newsmen to enable them play their role of information dissemination towards stemming the tide of covid-19 pandemic.
Ogbeche further informed that journalist’s duties are very essential, particularly during this COVID-19 pandemic as they are in fore front of educating and sensitizing the public on how to stay safe.
“Above all, they give us update on the COVID-19 pandemic and publicity to all the efforts of government to tackle the virus. They are vulnerable and we have a duty to protect them as a union” he said.
